We are so delighted to welcome Teresa Krasny and Jackie Wullschläger here for a fascinating discussion of Monet’s life through letters. Known as the ‘father of Impressionism’, Claude Monet is one of the most beloved and celebrated painters of all time. This year marks the centenary of the artist’s death, with celebrations and events taking place across the world including the exhibition Monet: Painting Time opening at Tate Modern in London in February 2027. Claude Monet: A Life in Letters has been published to coincide with the centenary. This is the first major English language publication dedicated to Monet’s letters, expertly selected and presented chronologically. The book is richly illustrated with works of art, contemporary photographs of the artist and his surroundings, and reproductions of some of the letters themselves. Drawn from Monet’s extensive correspondence from his formative early years through to his death at the age of 86, the book includes approximately 420 letters written by the artist to family and friends, collectors and art dealers, and artists and writers such as Manet, Courbet, Morisot, Pissarro, Mallarmé and Zola. The anthology reveals an intimate portrait of Monet. They reveal his creative process, artistic ambitions, financial struggles, personal relationships, and responses to major historical events, offering a fresh opportunity to explore the life of one of modern art’s most influential figures in his own words. Teresa Krasny is the lead editor of Claude Monet: A Life in Letters published by Thames & Hudson. She has been the director and curator of The Howard Collection since 2011. Prior to that, she was director and a head of sale in the Impressionist & Modern department at Christie’s London, having previously held specialist positions in the Post-war & Contemporary Art department and the Old Master Drawings department at Christie’s Paris. She is a co-founder and former chair of the International Catalogue Raisonné Association (ICRA) and founded the Edgar Degas: Catalogue Raisonné of Paintings and Works on Paper project. Jackie Wullschläger is Chief Art Critic of the Financial Times. Her books include the biographies Monet: The Restless Vision , which won the Elizabeth Longford Prize for Historical Biography 2024 and the Franco-British Society Literary Award 2023; Chagall: Love and Exile , which won the Spears Book Award 2009 and was shortlisted for the Costa Biography Award and the Duff Cooper Prize 2008; and Hans Christian Andersen: The Life of a Storyteller , which won the international Andersen Prize in 2002.
