We are so proud to be hosting an event in collaboration with the Japan Foundation with Nao-Cola Yamazaki whose brilliant books Beautiful Distance and Don’t Laugh at Other People’s Sex Lives are published by Daunt Books Publishing. Both books will be discussed, with questions led by author Sharlene Teo . Don’t Laugh at Other People’s Sex Lives was a smash-hit in Japan, winning the prestigious Bungei Prize, and selling over 250,000 copies. A touching portrait of late adolescence captured with exasperation, humour and tenderness, it is also an exploration of the exhilarating and destabilising experience of a love that defies prediction or explanation. Polly Barton is the translator. Beautiful Distance is a profoundly affecting and intimate story that looks with honesty and tenderness at the journey towards the end of a life. It explores what family means, how we think about death, and the power of quiet acts of love. It has been translated by Charlotte Goff. Nao-Cola Yamazaki (山崎 ナオコーラ) is a Japanese writer. They pride themselves on writing ‘things no one else can say in words anyone can understand’. They have won the Bungei Prize and the Shimase Award for Love Stories and been nominated multiple times for the Akutagawa Prize. Sharlene Teo will be leading the discussion. Sharlene’s first novel Ponti was awarded the inaugural Deborah Rogers Writer’s Award. She has also contributed to our anthologies At The Pond and Dog-Hearted .
