"Maybe We’re the Baddies?: Heroes, Villains, and Helpers in Cinderella Stories" with Michelle Anya Anjirbag Summary: Fairy tales are often thought about as vehicles for wonder and transformation, but they also communicate a fair amount about the social and cultural conditions from which they arise. In other words, beyond all of the magic, these are stories about us – our hopes and dreams, but also our fears, anxieties, and their sources. Cinderella stories become especially interesting to think about in this way because the danger and potential harm in these stories is not related to anything supernatural. Rather, the threats to the titular character are from within her own home, within the domestic and family space. By taking a closer look at the villains of Cinderella stories, this talk will explore what these figures tell us about us – our society, our culture, and where the story in all its iterations shows us what might yet be transformed. Bio: Michelle Anya Anjirbag is a lecturer in Children’s Literature and Creative Education at Goldsmiths, University of London. Her research areas include fairy tales, children’s literature and media, and adaptation, and she is the author of Appropriated Tales: Race and the Disney Fairy-Tale Mode (Wayne State University Press, 2025) and Cinderella: A Cultural History (Bodleian Library Publishing, 2026).
