Smith’s memoir Bread of Angels describes her post-World War II childhood in a condemned housing complex in Philadelphia and her teenage years in New Jersey (where her quest for artistic purity takes hold), all the way through to her emergence as a punk-rock icon with her seminal album, Horses. At the peak of her creative powers, Smith and her beloved Fred ‘Sonic’ Smith chose a life outside of the public eye to start a family on Lake St. Clair, Michigan. When Smith suffered profound loss, writing remained her companion on a lifelong journey driven by artistic freedom.
