The experimental fringe - emerging artists, non-institutional venues, work in progress.
Before a venue becomes canonical, there’s a period when it’s just a room that someone decided to use. Edinburgh’s experimental, artist-run venues are in that period now - project spaces in industrial units, one-night events in borrowed rooms, works-in-progress shown before they’re finished. The programming is provisional, the audiences are small, and the work tends to be more formally adventurous than anything you’d find in a building with a marketing department.
