Forging a career over four decades in countless genres, Devin Townsend has reached cult status in the progressive-metal world for his polymathic talent and continual pushing of the envelope. In 2025, after a career including iconic performances at Royal Albert Hall and multiple world tours, Townsend announced an indefinite hiatus from touring. Having then delivered the live debut in Groningen of ‘The Moth’, his most ambitious work to date, it was only natural to need a break. Townsend returned home to complete the studio album of ‘The Moth’ (out 29th May on InsideOut Music) and to rebuild himself in preparation for the next stage. Reporting From the Front Lines, with Lyse DoucetUnion Chapel · N1
As the BBC’s Chief International Correspondent, Lyse Doucet has witnessed and reported on some of the most consequential events of our time. She has reported from Iran and Afghanistan since 1988, played a leading role in the BBC's coverage of the Arab Spring uprisings reporting from Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, and Syria, and has covered major wars as well as efforts to make peace in the Middle East since 1994. In 2022 she covered the Russian invasion of Ukraine live from Kyiv as Putin’s tanks crossed the border. And most recently having reported on the ground in Iran in February 2026, Doucet has been a hugely insightful voice explaining the consequences of the U.S-Israeli led war on the country and what it means for the world. Doucet is renowned for her compassionate, human-centred reporting often in times of war and suffering. On September 15, she comes to the Intelligence Squared stage to share her reflections and insights from the frontlines. Doucet will also discuss the themes and approach of her Women’s Prize-shortlisted book, The Finest Hotel in Kabul, a vivid history of Afghanistan as seen from the iconic Inter-Continental Hotel. Miwa Nagato-Apthorp is a Singer-Songwriter from the Scottish Borders whose songwriting practice draws on folk traditions to explore multicultural understandings of history, climate, gender and home. Described as “a visceral new voice in Scottish Folk” Miwa was recently Musician in Residence at Alchemy Film & Arts and Connecting Threads where she developed new music exploring lesser-known histories and perspectives of the Scottish Borders and beyond. This extensive UK tour in September & October 2026 comes off the back of the band releasing their 13th studio album ‘Birdsong’. The album’s release was the first since the group signed to Creation Youth, the British independent record label launched by Alan McGee - the Creation Records founder who famously signed artists like Oasis, Primal Scream and My Bloody Valentine – and producer and Killing Joke bassist Martin ‘Youth’ Glover. The latest album ‘Birdsong’ was recorded at Paul Weller’s Black Barn Studios in Surrey and produced by Dr Robert, The Blow Monkeys’ lead singer Robert Howard (aka Dr Robert) is backed throughout Birdsong’s ten-tracks by fellow founding members Neville Henry (sax), Mick Anker (bass), with Crispin Taylor on drums and additional musicians such as Mick Talbot , Gina Foster and Steve Sidelnyk. Dr Robert said, “Youth is one of our closest neighbours up in the mountains near Granada, close to where I live, and I often pop in for a cup of tea. One time I was up there and I bumped into Alan McGee. I was sitting strumming an acoustic guitar and he asked if I could play Buick McKane, the old T Rex number. I did, which I think sealed the deal! He asked me to write and record a “brilliant Blow Monkey record”. I knew what he meant. The songs just poured out, almost without effort, which is always a good sign. It’s a very ‘up’ album, and deliberately so.” McGee added, “The album they recorded for Creation Youth at Paul Weller’s studio is as good as anything Dr Robert did back in the day. It’s the original line-up bar the drummer, so it’s has that unique sound that’s unmistakably The Blow Monkeys. I love this band!” After making their debut over 40 years ago, The Blow Monkeys became household names when classic singles ‘Digging Your Scene’ and ‘It Doesn’t Have To Be This Way’ became worldwide hits and their cover of Leslie Gore’s 1963 song ‘You Don’t Own Me’ featured on the biggest selling soundtrack of all time, ‘Dirty Dancing’. But there was always so much more going on with these soulful troubadours, with them possessing a relentless desire to move forward, collaborate, to be socially engaged and to have something to contribute. Back in the ‘80s they worked with people as varied as Curtis Mayfield, Paul Weller, Cheb Khaled and even Jamaican Toaster EEK-a-Mouse. Dr Robert even took time out to release one of the UK’s first home grown House records with ‘Wait’, his top 5 duet with Chicago soul diva Kym Maselle. Perfume Genius is the moniker of artist Mike Hadreas. Hadreas began his music career in 2008 and released his debut album, Learning, in 2010 via long-time label home Matador. The album immediately captured critics’ attention, with Pitchfork praising its “eviscerating and naked” songs, marked by “heartbreaking sentiments and bruised characterizations delivered in a voice that ranges from an ethereal croon to a slightly cracked warble.” These descriptors became the hallmarks of Perfume Genius - Hadreas’ unique ability to convey emotional vulnerability not only lyrically, but with his impressively nuanced vocals. In 2012, Hadreas released Put Your Back N 2 It, further growing his audience and critical acclaim. His 2014 album, Too Bright, marked a bold evolution in production and confidence. Co-produced by Adrian Utley of Portishead, it featured the standout single “Queen,” which quickly became a queer anthem and powerful statement of identity. Hadreas later performed the track on Late Night with David Letterman. In 2017, Perfume Genius released the GRAMMY-nominated No Shape, a breakthrough album that expanded his global fan base and brought mainstream recognition to his art. Produced by Blake Mills (Fiona Apple, Alabama Shakes), the record earned high praise, with The New Yorker noting, “The center of his music has always been a defiant delicacy—a ragged, affirmative understanding of despair. No Shape finds him unexpectedly victorious, his body exalted.” During the album’s campaign, Hadreas appeared on multiple late-night shows and graced the cover of The Fader. In 2020, Hadreas released Set My Heart On Fire Immediately, a critical masterpiece on Matador Records that garnered worldwide acclaim. Produced by GRAMMY winner Blake Mills, the album featured contributions from Phoebe Bridgers, Jim Keltner, Pino Palladino, Matt Chamberlin, Rob Moose, and longtime collaborator Alan Wyffels. It explored and subverted concepts of masculinity and traditional roles, introducing distinctly American musical influences.Hadreas promoted the album with performances on Jimmy Kimmel Live! (“Jason”), The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (“Whole Life”), and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (“On The Floor”). He followed with Ugly Season, a project born from his collaboration with choreographer Kate Wallich on The Sun Still Burns Here, a dance piece commissioned by Seattle Theatre Group and Mass MoCA and performed across major cities in 2019. Jasmine Jethwa’s music is shaped by a blend of Western and Indian influences and her South London upbringing, combining rich emotion with an instinctive sense of melody and harmony. Growing up, she was immersed in sound and movement, training from a young age in contemporary, jazz and ballet. That physical relationship to rhythm still runs through her songwriting, giving her songs a sense of momentum and emotional pull. Her earliest musical memories come from long car journeys soundtracked by artists such as David Gray, Tracy Chapman, Dido, The Eagles and the Gipsy Kings. Those records left her with a lasting love of acoustic, guitar-led music. Alongside this, watching Bollywood films with her Gujarati grandmother introduced her to Hindi melodies and vocal traditions that subtly inform her expressive vocal style. Jasmine’s songs blend folk-tinged acoustic pop with a reflective, inward-focused and honest sensibility. As she prepares her next release, she is leaning further into the mysticism that runs through her music, creating songs that feel both intimate and transportive, rooted in feeling as much as form.
