Olcay Bayir Book Now Home / Events / Olcay Bayir About the Performance Olcay’s music draws on the modal richness and poetic depth of Anatolian traditions, while embracing the cosmopolitan influences of London. Rather than recreating folklore, Bayir reshapes it — weaving traditional repertoire with her own compositions that explore exile, womanhood, memory and belonging. Her voice, both powerful and intimate, is central to her artistic identity. Olcay brings to the stage a performance that is vocally centred, emotionally charged, and culturally grounded — offering audiences a refined yet powerful encounter with contemporary Anatolian-rooted music. About the Artist London-based British-Kurdish singer-songwriter Olcay Bayir is recognised as one of the distinctive voices emerging from the UK’s global music scene. Described as “the queen of Anatolian song” (Heaven Magazine, NL) and praised by The Guardian for her compelling vocal presence, Bayir creates a contemporary sound rooted in her Kurdish-Alevi heritage. Her music draws on the modal richness and poetic depth of Anatolian traditions, while embracing the cosmopolitan influences of London. Rather than recreating folklore, Bayir reshapes it — weaving traditional repertoire with her own compositions that explore exile, womanhood, memory and belonging. Her voice, both powerful and intimate, is central to her artistic identity. Her debut album Neva | Harmony (World Music Network, 2014) led to a Songlines Music Awards – Best Newcomer nomination (2015). With Rüya | Dream (ARC Music, 2019), she moved further into original songwriting. Her latest release, Tu Gulî (ARC Music, 2024), reached #3 on the World Music Charts Europe, #4 on the Balkan World Music Charts, and #8 on the Transglobal World Music Chart, and was listed among the Top 10 Albums of 2024 by World Music Charts Europe. The album has been widely praised for balancing tradition and contemporary expression with emotional depth. Jean-Michel Blais: Mirador Book Now Home / Events / Jean-Michel Blais: Mirador Jean-Michel Blais was ready to make an epic. mirador , the pianist-composer’s fourth album, finds the Montrealer turning his gaze onto a wondrous world—exchanging contemporary minimalism for a light and generous maximalism . It’s an odyssey that spans choirs, strings and the music of the Andes, from Spanish caves to Estonian forests and all the way back to the basement in Nicolet, Québec, where Blais first imagined adventures. After 375 million streams and the biggest concerts of his life, the origins of mirador were remembrances from childhood. As a musical kid—and, even if he wasn’t fully aware of these things yet, as a queer person, with Tourette’s—Blais’ basement was his imaginary lookout, his “mirador,” from which he could dream the world. There, he’d browse in wonder through a Larousse encyclopaedia; he’d play with the family’s cheap Hammond organ and endlessly replay the same cassettes. On mirador , Jean-Michel Blais offers a path back to childhood—cut a crown from a piece of paper and suddenly you have a kingdom. Lucine Musaelian & The Khio Trio (Music from Armenia) Book Now Home / Events / Lucine Musaelian & The Khio Trio (Music from Armenia) The programme features Lucine’s unique sound as a vocalist self-accompanied by the viola da gamba, supported by colourful instrumental combinations that include kaval, clarinet, piano, percussion, and vielle. Audiences are drawn into an intimate and immersive listening experience, moving through a shifting landscape of emotion, memory and sound in which tradition is not fixed but continually reimagined. The Khio Trio explores the music of Armenian life, casting a contemporary light on ancient stories of land, diaspora, and spirituality. The convergence of Lucine Musaelian’s Armenian identity, Oliver Dover’s command of traditional wind instruments, and Fred Thomas’ improvisatory powers creates a sound rooted in tradition yet alive to Armenian themes of renewal and regeneration. Traditional mountain dance music sits alongside songs of love and exile, while haunting chants dating back to the 10th century are reworked, revealing a faith still embedded in Armenian spiritual life. Through this striking blend of sonorities, Khio Trio has assembled its own book of Armenian music, blurring the lines between old and new, and softening the edges between past and present. Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess: Chris Coull Quartet featuring Imogen Ryall Book Now Home / Events / Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess: Chris Coull Quartet featuring Imogen Ryall Trumpeter, Arranger & Musical Director Chris Coull presents a bold new jazz suite inspired by George Gershwin’s iconic opera, Porgy and Bess. Featuring award-winning vocalist Imogen Ryall and an all-star rhythm section—John Turville (piano), Simon Thorpe (bass) and Matt Fishwick (drums)—the concert brings fresh life to timeless songs including ‘Summertime, I Loves You Porgy’ and ‘It Ain’t Necessarily So’ narrated and reimagined with hard bop grooves, lush ballads and Latin fire, the performance transports audiences to 1930s Charleston to follow the story of Porgy and Bess. Combining Gershwin’s original spirit with influences from Miles Davis, Gil Evans and Blue Note’s golden era, this is world-class jazz: dynamic, soulful and captivating. Chris Coull Chris Coull has forged a diverse and respected jazz career spanning performance, arranging, education and promotion. Originally from Manchester, he won the YTV Prize for Jazz Arranging before becoming musical director at Doha Jazz during the 2000s. For the past fifteen years he has become a major figure on the Brighton and Hove jazz scene, founding the highly successful Speakeasy Jazz Club and curating the long-running Jazz at St Andrews concert series. Through these platforms he has presented leading UK artists including Clare Martin, Tony Kofi and Alan Barnes, alongside internationally renowned guests such as Ralph Moore and Howard Alden. As both trumpeter and arranger, Coull combines lyrical playing with the traditions and language of the great lineage of post-bop jazz trumpeters. “Chris Coull and the Rebirth Octet’s rendition of Miles Davis’ 1957 album ‘Birth of the Cool’ is far from just a note-for-note recreation.” Ivan Hewett – Daily Telegraph. Imogen Ryall — Vocals Imogen Ryall is a compelling vocalist celebrated for her expressive delivery, clear tone and emotional honesty. Her performances balance warmth, subtlety and strength, creating an immediate connection with audiences. Equally at home in intimate acoustic settings and larger contemporary jazz arrangements, Ryall brings nuance, clarity and theatrical instinct to every performance.
