What is time, really? Does it have a beginning? Could it ever run backwards? And is it even real? Join one of the world’s most celebrated physicists and science communicators, Jim Al-Khalili, for an unmissable live show that will stretch your mind and transform the way you experience every ticking second of your life. Drawing on his groundbreaking new book On Time, Jim takes audiences on a thrilling journey through the deepest mysteries of the universe — from the strange quantum world where the rules of time seem to dissolve, to the vast fabric of space-time bent and warped by gravity, to the thermodynamic arrow that insists time can only flow one way. Why can we remember the past but not the future? Why does the universe seem to move relentlessly forward? And what do the very edges of physics tell us about where time comes from? Jim will unpack ideas that have baffled philosophers and scientists for millennia — and deliver some genuinely surprising answers. Far from being an illusion conjured by our minds, he argues that time is one of the most fundamental features of reality itself, written into the structure of the universe from its very first moment. Join Jim live at Union Chapel, hear the arguments and ask your questions in the audience Q&A. Make your free dinner reservation to eat at our Margins Cafe before the show! As the BBC’s Chief International Correspondent, Lyse Doucet has witnessed and reported on some of the most consequential events of our time. She has reported from Iran and Afghanistan since 1988, played a leading role in the BBC's coverage of the Arab Spring uprisings reporting from Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, and Syria, and has covered major wars as well as efforts to make peace in the Middle East since 1994. In 2022 she covered the Russian invasion of Ukraine live from Kyiv as Putin’s tanks crossed the border. And most recently having reported on the ground in Iran in February 2026, Doucet has been a hugely insightful voice explaining the consequences of the U.S-Israeli led war on the country and what it means for the world. Doucet is renowned for her compassionate, human-centred reporting often in times of war and suffering. On September 15, she comes to the Intelligence Squared stage to share her reflections and insights from the frontlines. Doucet will also discuss the themes and approach of her Women’s Prize-shortlisted book, The Finest Hotel in Kabul, a vivid history of Afghanistan as seen from the iconic Inter-Continental Hotel. Drawing on years of interviews with its staff and guests, the book traces the country’s tumultuous history - from the Soviet withdrawal and civil war to the US invasion and the return of the Taliban - through the prism of this landmark hotel and the lives of the staff who kept it running during war and peace. Join us for an evening of discussion at Union Chapel, and have your questions answered in the audience Q&A. You will also have the chance to ask your questions during the Q&A. Make your dinner reservation to eat at our Margins Cafe before the show! You must have a general admission ticket for the show to gain entry for dinner. Carlo Rovelli is an award-winning theoretical physicist and writer with a gift for making complex ideas feel real and accessible. Whether exploring black holes, quantum mechanics, philosophy, or history, he inspires audiences with his sense of wonder and curiosity at how the world works. Beloved by millions, Rovelli’s books, including Seven Brief Lessons on Physics and The Order of Time, invite us into the deepest corners of the universe, while challenging what we thought we knew about time and space. On September 24, he will come to the Intelligence Squared stage to explore some of the most awe-inspiring discoveries of modern science, the subject of his new book, On The Equality of All Things. Drawing on both cutting-edge physics and ancient philosophy, he will ask what these ideas reveal about the strangeness of reality. How does modern science impact age-old philosophical questions? What does it really mean to say that something exists? What is time, if it flows differently for different observers? And what kind of world do we inhabit if nature’s most fundamental elements are defined only by their connections? Join him live at Union Chapel, and ask him your own questions during the Q&A. All tickets include a hardback copy of On The Equality of All Things by Carlo Rovelli, translated by Simon Carnell (RRP £20). Make your dinner reservation to eat at our Margins Cafe before the show! For a decade and a half, Grace Petrie has been one of the UK’s most urgent and passionate songwriters. Coming of age amidst the coalition government, her politically charged folk music quickly gained national attention and propelled her to the main stages of folk festivals from Cambridge to Vancouver to the Blue Mountains of Australia. Characterised by razor-sharp lyricism and the unmistakable passion of her stage presence, her live shows have become synonymous for fans with a unique atmosphere of hope and solidarity, while the LGBTQ anthem Black Tie has racked up 1.5 million streams and provided the soundtrack of expression for young queer folks all over the world. An irrepressible live performer, Grace has toured relentlessly to build loyal audiences in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada, as well as providing tour support for Billy Bragg, Frank Turner and Emmy-winner Hannah Gadsby. She has appeared on ITVX, Channel 4, Sky Arts, BBC Radio 2’s Folk Show and been a regular guest on The Guilty Feminist podcast, and has performed live BBC sessions for Tom Robinson (BBC 6 Music) and Jo Whiley (BBC Radio 2). The release of 2024’s album ‘Build Something Be er’, produced by Frank Turner, topped the UK’s Official Folk Album Chart and cemented her place as one of Britain’s most respected independent artists. In 2026 she is exploring the stripped back nature of folk songwriting once again, performing a show in two halves that encompasses both an inmate solo set and a career-retrospective full band performance featuring songs from across her sixteen-year catalogue. Shawn Colvin celebrating 30 years of a Few Small Repairs with rare UK Tour. Over the course of three decades, Shawn Colvin has established herself as a captivating performer and a revered storyteller, well-deserving of the commendation of her peers and the devoted audiences who have been inspired by her artistry. Celebrating 30 years of her classic album A Few Small Repairs, Shawn returns to the UK and Ireland for a rare tour. As she enters her thirtieth decade as a songwriter and performer, Shawn continues to reaffirm her status as a vital voice in music. Shawn Colvin stopped the industry in its tracks with her arresting 1989 debut, Steady On. The following spring, Colvin took home the GRAMMY Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album, establishing herself as a mainstay in the singer-songwriter genre. In the ensuing 30 years, Colvin has won three GRAMMY Awards, released thirteen superlative albums, written a critically acclaimed memoir, maintained a non-stop national and international touring schedule, appeared on countless television and radio programs, had her songs featured in major motion pictures and created a remarkable canon of work. "...extraordinary songs, mesmerising guitar playing, and a voice that goes effortlessly from bruise-tender to scar-hard in a matter of minutes... her lyrics are crafted and clever, full of subtlety and polished phrases...With delicious sarcasm and acerbic stories, she held the audience spellbound... her songs are so personal to her that they speak to everyone who listens." - The Guardian Make your dinner reservation to eat at our Margins Cafe before the show! With a career now spanning six decades, Robyn Hitchcock remains a truly one-of-a-kind artist – surrealist rock ‘n’ roller, iconic troubadour, guitarist, poet, painter, and performer. An unparalleled, deeply individualistic songwriter and stylist, Hitchcock has traversed many genres with humor, intelligence and originality over 30 albums and seemingly infinite live performances. From The Soft Boys’ proto-psych-punk and The Egyptians’ Dadaist pop to solo masterpieces like 1984’s milestone I Often Dream of Trains and 1990’s Eye, Hitchcock has crafted a strikingly original oeuvre rife with sagacious observation, astringent wit, recurring marine life, mechanized rail services, cheese, Clint Eastwood, and innumerable finely drawn characters, real and imagined. Celebrating over 40 years as a live performer, Eddi Reader has effortlessly developed into one of popular music’s most thrilling and affecting performers. What sets Eddi apart is the depth and quality of the emotional performance and ability to not only move the listener, but connect her experience to that of her audience. Though first brought into the limelight as front woman for Fairground Attraction, who’s #1 single, Perfect and parent album, First of a Million Kisses, both topped the charts, it was Eddi’s subsequent solo albums that signalled her ability to assimilate different musical styles and make them very much her own. With her work in song, from the traditional to the contemporary, Eddi Reader extinguishes the preordained boundaries of genre, bringing joyous life to all forms. Her rare blend of meltingly true vocals and towering romanticism combine with an astute and pragmatic nature to make her a unique and powerful figure in contemporary music. With 10 critically acclaimed solo albums, and awards in tow, Eddi continues to delight audiences worldwide. The past few years have proved to be some of her busiest yet, playing sell out shows as part of her ‘40 Years Live Tour’ in addition to appearing as special guest with the Jools Holland’s Rhythm & Blues Orchestra for an extensive UK tour. Miwa Nagato-Apthorp is a Singer-Songwriter from the Scottish Borders whose songwriting practice draws on folk traditions to explore multicultural understandings of history, climate, gender and home. Described as “a visceral new voice in Scottish Folk” Miwa was recently Musician in Residence at Alchemy Film & Arts and Connecting Threads where she developed new music exploring lesser-known histories and perspectives of the Scottish Borders and beyond. Her debut EP, Noren, was released in March 2025 and she was awarded “Best Acoustic” at the Scottish Alternative Music Awards Make your free dinner reservation to eat at our Margins Cafe before the show!
