When a devout Christian police sergeant travels to the remote Scottish island of Summerisle to investigate the disappearance of a young girl, he encounters a close-knit community whose pagan beliefs and seasonal rituals stand in stark contrast to his own. As his investigation deepens, every answer seems only to raise more disturbing questions, leading him towards a revelation he could never have anticipated. Directed by Robin Hardy from a screenplay by Anthony Shaffer, The Wicker Man overturns the conventions of the traditional horror film, replacing monsters and haunted houses with folklore, religious conflict and mounting psychological unease. Christopher Lee considered Lord Summerisle to be his finest performance, while Paul Giovanni's extraordinary folk-inspired soundtrack became inseparable from the film's haunting atmosphere. Initially released in a heavily truncated version, it has since been restored and is now widely regarded as one of the greatest British horror films ever made.
