Hired as caretaker of an isolated and deserted mountain hotel, struggling author Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) is haunted by his frustrated creative ambitions and fears of failure. Nurtured by the claustrophobia and isolation of his surroundings, his underlying insanity gradually evolves into rampant madness as he attempts to murder with an axe the only other occupants of the hotel - his wife and son (Shelley Duvall and Danny Lloyd). Truly hypnotic, disturbing, ultimately entertaining and a Filmhouse Halloween classic for all time.
