Award-winning author Tom McCarthy visits Foyles to celebrate his newest book 'The Rhyl Poster' with Eyal Weizman. Benjamin Stanton is a decorated Gulf War veteran and star legal theorist in Europe’s highest court. But after he meets the enigmatic Pirotti, his allegiance begins to shift. Introduced to pills his new handler calls petits bleus, Stanton finds himself passing out court documents to Pirotti's colleagues - or just passing out - as he surrenders to sublime visions in which lurk dark traces of a violent incident back in Iraq. Entrusted with the drafting of an epochal, landmark ruling, Stanton instead begins work on something else: a vast, sprawling 'confession' made up of patterns, markings and encoded revelations that has the power to change the world that he and those around him have so carefully constructed. To destroy it, certainly, but maybe, from that very act of ruination, to usher in a bright new beginning. The Rhyl Poster crafts a hallucinatory landscape in which guilt – our own, and our whole era’s – is endlessly replayable, but never quite expungeable. Tom McCarthy’s work has been translated into more than 20 languages and adapted for cinema, theatre and radio. His third novel C was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, the Walter Scott Prize and the European Literature Prize and his fourth, Satin Island, was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize and the Goldsmiths Prize. In 2013 he was awarded the inaugural Windham-Campbell Literature Prize by Yale University. McCarthy is also author of the study Tintin and the Secret of Literature, and of the essay collection Typewriters, Bombs, Jellyfish. He lives in Berlin. Eyal Weizman is the founder and director of Forensic Architecture and Professor of Spatial and Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths, University of London, where, in 2005, he founded the Centre for Research Architecture. In 2007, with Sandi Hilal and Alessandro Petti, he established the architectural collective DAAR in Beit Sahour, Palestine. He is the author of numerous books, including Hollow Land , The Least of all Possible Evils , Investigative Aesthetics , The Roundabout Revolutions , The Conflict Shoreline , Forensis and Forensic Architecture: Violence at the Threshold of Detectability . In 2019 he was elected Life Fellow of the British Academy. In 2020 he received a MBE for services to architecture. He was the recipient of the London Design Award (2021) and the Mark Cousins Theory Award (2024). Forensic Architecture is the recipient of the Right Livelihood Award, a Peabody Award for interactive media, the European Cultural Foundation Award for Culture and the RIBA Charles Jencks Award.
