About this event

Discover what drives narcissism in relationships, and why it can be so attractive at first, and so difficult later on. Followed by Q&A. Why can people with narcissistic traits be so attractive at first – and why can relationships with them sometimes become so difficult? Narcissism is one of psychology’s most talked-about personality traits, but also one of its most misunderstood. In this workshop, Dr Claire Hart explores what narcissism really is, the different ways it can show up, and how narcissistic traits shape the way we relate to others – from attraction and romantic relationships to empathy, social interactions and our increasingly digital lives. Claire separates popular myths from psychological evidence, drawing on her own research into narcissism, empathy and relationships to explore how these traits play out in everyday life. She'll look at what drives narcissistic behaviour, why it can come across as confident and appealing, and what happens when someone's need for attention and admiration collides with the people around them. Once you understand what’s going on beneath the surface, it’s easier to spot the red flags and set boundaries that stick. Understand what narcissism really is, beyond the popular myths Explore why narcissistic traits can seem so attractive at first Discover how narcissism shapes relationships, empathy and everyday interactions Learn how to recognise problematic patterns and set healthier boundaries Dr Claire Hart is an Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Southampton whose research focuses on the psychology of narcissism, close relationships, attachment, empathy, and wellbeing.
