Far from being a tool for fortune-telling, tarot can be a powerful way to explore your feelings and gain insight into your life. Over six weeks, you'll learn to read the cards using the Rider-Waite-Smith deck – the classic teaching deck from which most modern decks derive – while also exploring older and more contemporary decks along the way. You'll build your understanding step by step: starting with the history and symbolism of the Major Arcana, moving through the suits and court cards, and finishing with how to read cards together in a spread. By the end of the course, you'll be equipped to continue developing your tarot practice with confidence, along with a list of recommended further reading. Course Overview Week 1: The History of Tarot: Tracing tarot's origins from the Florentine Renaissance to its reinvention as a tool for fortune-telling. Week 2: The First Half of the Major Arcana: An in-depth study of the first 11 trump cards and how to begin reading their symbolism. Week 3: The Second Half of the Major Arcana: Exploring the remaining trumps, the significance of card order and numbers, and how to read cards in combination. Week 4: The Suits: Court Cards: Understanding the court cards, the structure of the suits, and beginning work on spreads. Week 5: The Suits: Pip Cards: A deep dive into the numbered suit cards, and developing your knowledge of spreads and reading rituals. Week 6: How to Do a Reading: Bringing everything together through sample readings and group discussion. Diane Purkiss is Professor of English at the University of Oxford, and a fellow of Keble College. She has published on witchcraft, fairies, and also on the English Civil War, the occasion of England's biggest witchhunt.
