Discover the mechanisms of trauma transmission and the importance of self care. Followed by Q&A. Are mental health difficulties and addiction a normal response to having a nervous system in a chronic state of defence? This workshop will answer this and improve your understanding of trauma as an embodied experience. Polyvagal theory, Dr Stephen Porges’ groundbreaking work on the science of safety, health, growth and restoration, will be central to the session. Trauma, what it is and how it is defined Physical health impacts of embodied trauma Attachment & child development The brain & nervous system Adverse Childhood Experiences & Adverse Community Experiences Social & economic determinants of health outcomes Most importantly, we will also cover the importance of self care in a time of collective stress & overwhelm. About your host: Jane Mulcahy PhD is researcher and activist, with extensive research experience on prison, Probation, law, human rights and trauma. She has worked as a researcher in the area of criminal justice, penal policy and social justice since 2005 and is currently a Research Fellow with the Research Evidence into the Policy, Programmes and Practice (REPPP) team at the University of Limerick. Jane has also spoken before the UN Committee against Torture on human rights issues in prison, the Justice Sub-Committee on Penal Reform on proposed bail reform, at the Fair Trials’ Expert Seminar on Pre-trial Detention in London and the Bail and Jail event at Harvard Law.
