The LSD-fuelled husband she loves has succumb to schizophrenia and she must resist a bizarre plot to wrestle away the custody of her son. La Rupture displays all the hoofprints and consummate control of Chabrol’s famously meticulous, stylish and baroque thrillers. It also represents his most audacious experimentation with narrative form, finally taking an anarchic step over the edge. It undoubtedly ranks alongside Le Boucher and Les Biches as one of his finest works.
