To mark the 550th anniversary of Caxton setting up his printing press by Westminster Abbey, experts Matthew Payne and Thomas Penn explore why he came to settle there and why it proved the ideal environment for his business to flourish. Find out how Caxton created a network of relationships that stretched from his immediate neighbours, round the Thames, to London – and far beyond. About Matthew Payne and Thomas Penn Matthew Payne is the Keeper of the Muniments at Westminster Abbey. Thomas Penn is currently working on a life of William Caxton. A historian of the later middle ages and sixteenth century, he is the author of Winter King: The Dawn of Tudor England , and The Brothers York: An English Tragedy . He writes for, among others, the Guardian and London Review of Books, works in publishing and lives in London.
