About this event
Broadcast journalism in America has changed beyond recognition in the past few decades. The days of major networks investing money in proper investigative journalism are long gone. Steal This Story, Please is a compelling portrait of investigative journalist Amy Goodman, a woman who has taken a different path in pursuit of truth. Oscar-nominated filmmakers Carl Deal and Tia Lessin trace Goodman's career from her early days in radio through to her days on community TV in New York to the present day, having helmed award winning independent news show Democracy Now! since the late 90s, available both online and via FSTV (Free Speech TV). Goodman covers stories minimised or ignored by mainstream US media - the massacre in East Timor, violent suppression of dissent in Nigeria, life in Iraq before the US invasion and reporting on the ground in Gaza. What comes through is Goodman's knack for getting to the heart of an issue well before it reaches critical mass, and an approach to journalism that is both headstrong and deeply human. Steal This Story, Please! is both a sharp critique of corporate media and a celebration of what journalism can be when it refuses to look away.
