About this event

Welcome back to CULT SCHOOL at CULTPLEX, where the syllabus is the world of cult film! CULT SCHOOL isn’t academic, it’s an enthusiastic dive into why these films continue to fascinate cult fans, horror heads, and film critics around the world. Since Frankenstein, the horrors of the body have revealed so much about humanity and the world we live in. By moving terror away from what exists outside us and into the unsettling terrain of our own flesh, body horror asks us to look directly at what we often prefer to avoid. Built on disgust and repulsion, this visceral form of horror challenges ideas around normativity, social structures, power and ‘acceptability’. Psychotherapist Katie Evans draws on psychoanalysis, queer theory and years of experience in GSRD therapy (gender, sexuality and relationship diversities) to explore why body horror taps into some of the core fears of the human experience. BIO: Katie Evans is a private practice therapist specialising in gender, sexuality, abuse, addiction and trauma. After studying film at university before training to work in mental health, she developed a passion for bringing these two worlds together, particularly through the genre of horror. She has spoken at conferences across Europe, is a published writer, and is a registered guest lecturer at John Moores University, alongside her work with Seed Talks. Katie is a long-term advocate for using pop culture in therapeutic spaces. Runtime: 0 minutes Film
