After his wife is murdered by agents of a paranoid shogun, former executioner Ogami Ittō takes to the road with his young son Daigoro, pushing him through feudal Japan in a baby cart fitted with an alarming arsenal of hidden weapons. Pursued by ninja assassins and three fearsome Masters of Death, father and son carve a path through ambushes, betrayals and spectacular fountains of blood. Created for American grindhouse audiences by re-editing and dubbing the first two Lone Wolf and Cub films, SHOGUN ASSASSIN transforms Kenji Misumi’s samurai epics into a lean, hallucinatory barrage of flashing blades, severed limbs and pulsing synthesiser music. Initially notorious in Britain for its extreme violence, the film became a midnight-movie classic whose influence can be felt everywhere from Wu-Tang Clan’s Liquid Swords to Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill.
