"Shields, Symbols & Secrets: Decoding the Art & Science of Heraldic Design." with Dan McCabe Summary: When you think of heraldry, you might imagine chivalrous knights, medieval jousting tournaments, or highly decorative coats of arms. While that’s certainly part of the story, heraldry is a visual language that can be found in a variety of modern contexts - from fashion brands to council vans, fine wines to street signs, football clubs to local pubs. This talk will unlock the unique systems and symbols of heraldic language and teach you how to decode the different types of heraldic design hiding in plain sight. It will examine the rules that govern it, the ideas that inform it, and the ways in which it is sometimes used to seduce, mislead, and exploit! You’ll leave in no doubt that, far from being an archaic art form of the past, heraldry is alive and kicking in 21 st -century British society. Come curious. Leave fluent in heraldry. Bio: Dan McCabe has over 26 years’ experience as a creative practitioner in branding and packaging, alongside 19 years as a design educator. During this time, he has been at the forefront of exploring the role of the graphic designer as historian, producing a series of works that rethink heraldry, including work showcased in the internationally recognised handbook Visual Research. He has presented his research into modern heraldry and creative histories at institutions including the Society of Antiquaries and the University of Oxford, and has published papers and practice-based research in academic journals including The Coat of Arms and The Poster. Dan self-publishes personal and collaborative projects through his online sketchbook, www.graphicamusing.co.uk. He also regularly produces illustrative work for charitable organisations. A copy of his Portsmouth Twitching poster, created to raise funds for the RSPB, is currently displayed (somewhere) in the Houses of Parliament. Dan is Associate Head within the School of Architecture, Art, and Design and Course Leader of the MA Visual Communication programme at the University of Portsmouth. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a member of the Heraldry Society, as well as a bassist, birder, beachcomber and badge collector – yes, he’s nerdy.
