About this event

Directed by Akira Kurosawa and starring Tatsuya Nakadai, this Japanese film is a stunning version of King Lear that in some ways improves on the original. The Gloucester sub-plot is cut and the warrior-king's youngest son foresees the chaos that will ensue from the division of power. About the season: People often say that if Shakespeare were alive today he would be writing for the movies. What is startling is how often, since the beginnings of cinema, his plays have been adapted for the screen. Following a highly successful season devoted to the work of Harold Pinter, Chiswick Cinema now focuses on the infinite variety of filmed Shakespeare and will accompany four major screenings with talks, supplementary showings and celebrity interviews.
