Lee Chang-dong’s masterfully directed follow-up to Burning (LFF 2018) finds four strangers’ lives entwined by hidden desires and repressed emotions. A chance meeting introduces filmmaker Ye-ji to Mi-ok’s family, whose lives have been affected by her husband’s unemployment. They’re perfect subjects for her documentary on workers who have been made redundant, leading them to spend more time in Ye-ji and her husband’s world. But as their connection deepens, the stark contrast between their class and background sees fractures appear in the collaboration, forcing them to confront their marriages and the wider world they all inhabit.
