This lecture explores the mathematics of musical sound, what makes it deep or rich, and how instrument size and shape define it. The production of sound by a musical instrument is a process of great beauty and mystery. What makes a sound deep or rich? How does it depend on the size of the instrument and the way it is made. In this lecture, Professor Goriely studies the mathematics of musical sound through experimentation and modelling.
