Few among today’s pianists, and from the past, could surpass Nikolai Lugansky’s searching artistry, deep musical intelligence and gilt-edged technical authority. His recital couples Robert Schumann’s brooding Fantasiestücke Op. 111, ardent late works, with his youthful cycle of piano pieces, Faschingsschwank aus Wien . Chopin’s Impromptus, spontaneous and mostly playful, are framed by his wistful Barcarolle and the mercurial Scherzo No. 4.
