About this event
Explore why so many adults are only now discovering their Autism or ADHD, and what that means for identity and wellbeing. Followed by Q&A. Why are so many people reaching adulthood before their Autism or ADHD is recognised? And what happened to the "lost generation" of people over 40 who never received a diagnosis at all? For many adults, a late diagnosis can be both validating and overwhelming – finally explaining experiences that have felt confusing for years, while also prompting a re-evaluation of identity, relationships, education, career, and the past itself. In this insightful, evidence-informed workshop, Dr Emilie Moorhead explores the science and lived experience of late diagnosis, drawing on current research to unpack why so many people are missed, and what happens when they finally discover their neurodivergent identity. We'll look at why Autism and ADHD can go unrecognised or misdiagnosed – including differences in presentation, gender differences, masking, and the sophisticated coping strategies people build without realising it. Finally, we’ll explore the hidden cost of all that masking: years of adapting to a world built for neurotypical minds, and how that can quietly lead to exhaustion, burnout and real difficulty regulating emotion. Understand why Autism and ADHD are so often missed or misdiagnosed in adulthood Explore the impact of masking, and the hidden cost of years spent compensating Discover what current research reveals about the "lost generation" of undiagnosed adults Learn practical ways to support neurodivergent people, and yourself, to thrive Dr Emilie Moorhead (DClinPsych, CPsychol, BSc) is a Clinical Psychologist with nearly two decades of clinical experience working with Neurodivergent people.
