Bell Pioneering Black independent filmmaker Charles Burnett followed up his 1978 debut feature Killer of Sheep with My Brother’s Wedding in 1983. The film centres on the young and proudly working-class Pierce Mundy, who finds himself caught between family expectations and loyalty to a friend. Told with the deep humanism that is emblematic of Burnett’s work, My Brother’s Wedding provides an intimate window into early ’80s South Central LA, as well as a compassionate counterpoint to the “hood” films that would later define South Central in the popular imagination. The film was originally released in a rough-cut form in 1983, and notoriously difficult to find until its first restoration and re-edit by Burnett in 2007. This latest restoration continues the effort to honour Burnett's artistic vision. A new 4K restoration by Prasab lab (Chennai) including frame-by-frame image repair, colour correction and digital mastering, in collaboration with Milestone Films, UCLA Film & Television Archive, and Kino Lorber. Part of Cinema Rediscovered on Tour: a Watershed project in association with Wiper & True and collaboration with principal sponsors Park Circus and StudioCanal. With support from BFI Audience Projects Fund awarding National Lottery funding.
