"Mind and Society: A Philosophical Analysis" With Dr Mattia Gallotti Details: What is the nature of human society? There cannot be society without individuals, but there is more to society than the sum of individual habits and perspectives. The idea that individual people contribute to the creation of a body social from a shared point of view, namely one that maps their own and the others’ mental states onto a group (‘we'-) perspective, has been central to the study of human sociality for a long time. Yet, despite its intuitive strength, this idea has made its way into interdisciplinary discussions of the social mind (brain) only in the last decades of the twentieth century. In this talk, I discuss the relation between mind and society in terms of an influential theory of ’social ontology’, the study of the nature of social matters, by the late American philosopher John Searle. Mattia Gallotti is a founding faculty member at the London Interdisciplinary School (LIS) and the Editor-in-Chief of Interdisciplinary Science Reviews . A philosopher by training, prior to joining LIS Mattia lectured on social philosophy at the London School of Economics and managed a programme on the human mind at the University of London. A graduate of Bocconi, LSE, and the University of Exeter, he held fellowships at Columbia University and the Jean Nicod Institute in Paris. Mattia has published on themes of social ontology and cognition in academic journals such as Philosophy of the Social Sciences and Trends in Cognitive Sciences .
