Martin Stephenson is one of Britain’s best-loved musicians. As a solo artist and with his band The Daintees he has produced over 40 albums and played thousands of concerts. His live performances are an exuberant tour-de-force, combining heart-in-your-mouth intimacy with playful humour and warm self-deprecation. He is a unique, engaging, spontaneous and talented performer. Martin has been in session with both Tom Robinson in London and Roddy Hart in Glasgow at the BBC Radio Quayside sessions and featured recently on the Roddy Hart show at BBC Radio Scotland. Billy Connolly came to visit and record him as part of the BBC tv documentary ‘Made in Scotland” in which he referred to Martin as ‘My kind of musician”. “Martin’s shows are wonderful things, featuring songs old and new, stories both sad and hilarious and finger picking guitar of the very highest standard. The poet and the comedian in perfect synergy; an evening out that will gladden the heart in these times.”

Martin Stephenson & The Daintees hail from the North East of England. Their debut single 'Roll On Summertime' was released in 1982 on Kitchenware Records (home of Prefab Sprout, The Kane Gang, Hurrah!). 'Boat To Bolivia' was the debut album by Martin Stephenson & The Daintees. After appearances on Channel 4's 'The Tube' and BBC2's 'Whistle Test' the album went on to become one of the essential releases of 1986. In 1988, the second Martin Stephenson & The Daintees album ‘Gladsome, Humour & Blue’ was released which featured the singles ’There Comes A Time’ & ‘Wholly Humble Heart’. Don’t miss Martin Stephenson & The Daintees perform music from the ‘Gladsome, Humour & Blue’ LP along with other classics and fan favourites. Please arrive early before event door times if you have preferred seats. Due to the nature of our venue, please be prepared to queue for entry. The venue is fully accessible, with use of ramps and the upstairs bar is accessible with use of a platform lift. The bar is located on the first floor of the venue and will be open from the stated door time and remain open after the show. Alcohol consumption will be limited to the bar area only, it is not permitted to take alcohol to the main chapel space. An array of soft drinks and snacks will also be available and are permitted in the main space - please note the Union Chapel bar and kiosk accept card payment only. Strictly no food or drink may be brought from outside into the venue. Water bottles must be emptied before entering the venue, with refilling stations available inside.
