About this event

This event is presented in association with the ‘American Berserk’ issue of Granta magazine . The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Mike Figgis. A crazed street cop in Los Angeles county meets his match when a new detective joins the Internal Affairs division. . . Mike Figgis’s second film stars Richard Gere as Dennis Peck, a prominent patrolman in the LAPD. Peck is a father of eight children – with another on the way – and the orchestrator of at least many corrupt schemes with his colleagues, among them extortion and contract killing. But Peck’s life of ease and greed is rocked when a detective, Raymond Avila (Andy García), joins the Internal Affairs division and starts asking questions – an investigation which has major repercussions for both men. This eccentric, sleazy, glistening neo-noir, from a screenplay by Henry Bean, marked the start of Figgis’s career as a California film-maker (he also co-wrote the score), and prepared the way for the Oscar-winning Leaving Las Vegas and his split-screen video experiment Time Code .
