John Trent (the late, great Sam Neill) is an insurance investigator, who while probing into the mysterious disappearance of a renowned horror author visits a small town. Informally desigmated as the final entry in horror supremo John Carpenter's "Apocalypse Trilogy" following The Thing and Prince of Darkness , In the Mouth of Madness stars luminaries such as Julie Carmen, Jürgen Prochnow, David Warner and Charlton Heston alongside Neill. The film is a multi-layered tribute to the work of real-life horror novelist H.P. Lovecraft, with the titles of in-film novelist Sutter Cane's books - and indeed, the title of the film itself - being closely related to ones penned by Lovecraft.
