When a lonely teenager is introduced by a classmate to a mysterious late-night TV show - The Pink Opaque - the world within the show begins to feel more real than real life. Jane Schoenbrun’s evocative and uncanny story of suburban horrors and coming of age in the mid-1990s creates a foreboding feeling that unspools across decades before reaching a breaking point. The director is certainly quite a Filmhouse staff favourite, with I Saw The TV Glow being one of our staff picks in our birthday programme which we recently played in June and July - but not to worry if you missed it, as we give you another chance to catch this devastating psychological horror as part of our Looking Camp Right in the Eye season , a selection of films which are all suggested further watching as films that are all either inspirations to Camp Miasma or directly referenced within it (and, well, one that is my programmer’s prerogative…)." - Written by Raymah Tariq, Programme Manager -- This film hit such a perfect intersection of nostalgia for that very particular late-90s/early-00s beginning of the digital age aesthetic and metaphorically exploring gender identity and repression, with such care and experience, that it utterly destroyed me on first watch (even though I thought I had everything figured out at that point in my life!). My second viewing hit me in my feelings even more, and I fully expect every subsequent viewing will do the same. For me, this should be essential viewing for everyone, if not to understand yourself a bit more, to understand others a bit more.
