On the eve of his third marriage, filmmaker Caveh Zahedi looks back over the compulsions, affairs and visits to sex workers that wrecked his previous relationships. Speaking directly to the camera, he reconstructs his worst decisions with actors, former partners and a disarming willingness to expose his own vanity. Confession repeatedly tips into comedy, then circles back towards consequences that cannot be laughed away. Part memoir, part documentary and part elaborately staged act of self-incrimination, I Am a Sex Addict turns the confessional film inside out. Zahedi’s cheerful candour is both seductive and suspect, forcing the audience to question whether honesty can become another form of selfishness. Awkward, formally playful and often painfully funny, it is less a story of redemption than an uncomfortably intimate portrait of a man trying to make art from the damage he has caused.
