Howl: Experimental Music and Drawing Session

HOWL is a new experimental music and drawing series, exploring new works and free improvisations. At HOWL, audience members are encouraged to listen, reflect, and express themselves using the art materials provided. Feel free to take your pieces home, or leave them with us to be used in the next event poster! For our inaugural HOWL, we're premiering new works by Boston based composer Sam Long, as well as exploring free improvisations. Performances will be in various configurations of duos of the following artists. American cellist Liam Battle is known for his uncompromising dedication to new music and experimentation. He is regularly engaged as a performer, scholar, curator, and teacher. His work finds itself at home in experimental, classical, improvisatory, independent, and academic music spaces. “The audience was enraptured in a deep meditation” is how Forbes has described the emotional impact of Liam’s performance. He is regularly engaged as a soloist for his unique ability to interpret complex, demanding scores and to communicate with audiences. Liam has collaborated with dozens of today’s leading composers on world premiere performances and careful interpretations of their music for solo cello and chamber ensembles. Liam also performs with the Antigone Music Collective, an independent new music ensemble which he founded with violinist Amelia Korbitz. His performance with the ensemble was noted for its “ technical mastery, rich tone, and fluid character… ” by Cleveland Classical. Rebecca Burden is a musician based in South East London. A cellist, composer, and educator, her practice has taken her from clubs, abandoned offices and hotels frequented by witches, to the Barbican, the Athens Acropolis and Hamburg Elbphilharmonie. She is a Britten Pears Young Artist. Her new work 'Fond Fancy' for ensemble and electronics, was written for and premiered by the House of Bedlam at the 2026 Aldeburgh Festival. Her award-winning piano trio Terra Invisus specialises in free improvisation and the performance of new works. In 2025, the trio toured Lithuania with their international project Tarp Dviejų. In 2026, they have collaborated with CoMA London, and are preparing new releases with composers Ed Cooper and Patrick Ellis. Michelle Hromin is a Croatian-American clarinetist and writer based in London. Specialising in contemporary music, her work explores multiphonics and resonance-based sonorities, and the idea of presence through artistic mediums. She is a clarinettist with the Colin Currie Group and has performed with groups such as Apartment House, Manchester Collective, Her Ensemble, London Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Modern, English National Opera, London Concert Orchestra, Barefoot Opera, London Mozart Players and at the London Contemporary Music Festival, Barbican Centre, Tokyo Opera City, Iklectik, and Cafe Oto. An advocate for new and experimental music, Hromin has commissioned and performed dozens of new works. Highlights include: 'Kalendar', 12 miniatures about the months in the Croatian year with composer Micahel Spiroff; and '_nts', a new work by Jellal Koay for close-dyad multiphonics and 4-channel electronics. She has also worked with composers on the London Symphony Orchestra Soundhub Scheme, Bang on a Can, Eighth Blackbird, and UPROAR Wales. Her debut solo album, Present Tense, consisting of works for clarinets and pedals, is due to be released on Relative Pitch Records in 2026. Rosa Juritz is a bassoonist and interdisciplinary artist based in London. With a background in composition and an improvisatory practice, her work examines the interplay of auditory and visual artistic methods. She uses the linguistic concept of transliteration as a framework for investigating what new forms of artistic expression might arise when methods of one medium are replicated within another.
