About this event

When a teacher disappears beneath a rural school, his archaeologist colleague Hieda arrives to investigate a recently uncovered burial mound. He joins forces with the missing man’s teenage son, Masao, whose classmates are being transformed into grotesque spider-legged heads. Together they must descend into the ancient chambers below the school and prevent a gateway to the world of demons from opening completely. Following the industrial nightmare of Tetsuo, Shinya Tsukamoto turned to folk horror and creature comedy for this wildly kinetic adaptation of Daijiro Morohoshi’s manga. HIRUKO THE GOBLIN combines handmade effects, frantic camerawork and school-holiday adventure with images of genuine nightmare intensity. Playful, disgusting and constantly inventive, it reveals a more colourful but no less unruly side of Tsukamoto’s cinema. Introduced by James Balmont - film critic and writer.
