Following a patriarch’s lavish birthday gathering that descends into chaos, Festen lays bare the fractures beneath a façade of bourgeois respectability, rendered through handheld camerawork, stark natural lighting, and raw, unflinching performances. Winner of the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, this bold film announced Thomas Vinterberg as an exciting new voice at the dawn of the Dogme 95 movement. With an introduction by Leo Krenzer. Screened from a 35mm print in the Museum’s collection.
