This film contains flashing and fast-moving images which may affect viewers who are susceptible to photosensitive epilepsy. Screening as part of the Samizdat Eastern European Film Festival 2026 . Presented in collaboration with Doc Screen , this screening will be preceded by a short introduction and followed by a moderated short reflection on the film and our relationship to advertising, memory and nostalgia during transitional times, by Alexandra Maria Colta from Scottish Documentary Institute. Constructed entirely from Romanian TV adverts made after the fall of Ceaușescu, Radu Jude and philosopher Christian Ferencz-Flatz’s inventive found-footage film traces three decades of a society's embrace of the promises of capitalism. Divided into eight thematic chapters and an epilogue, the film moves at a dizzying pace through ads for everything from soft drinks and mobile phones to porn phone lines and privatisation schemes, revealing attitudes towards consumption, gender, work and desire. By dissecting the language and imagery of advertising, Eight Postcards from Utopia turns the glossy fantasy of consumer culture into a sharp, darkly comic portrait of Romania in transition.
