Screening as part of Film & Philosophy . This screening will have a short introduction and be followed by an open discussion on Language, Conditioning, and the Construction of the Self led by James Mooney (University of Edinburgh). Confined within an isolated suburban compound, three adult siblings have spent their entire lives cut off from the outside world by authoritarian parents who systematically engineer their reality. Yorgos Lanthimos’s deadpan masterpiece dramatises Ludwig Wittgenstein’s proposition that "the limits of my language mean the limits of my world" . Through a chilling exploration of institutional power and control, the film exposes how profoundly our moral horizons and desires are constructed by our environment, challenging us to consider how much of our own "autonomous" subjectivity is simply the deterministic output of our milieux.
