About this event
The restless, unpredictable spirit of Détective emerges from its playful collision of genres and characters. Set largely within a hotel, the film brings together private investigators, unresolved murders, boxers, gangsters, dubious hangers-on, students and lonely romantics, creating a world where crime, comedy and melodrama constantly intersect. This eclectic blend is reinforced by Godard’s inspired casting, which unites performers from strikingly different artistic traditions. Singer Johnny Hallyday appears alongside New Wave icon Jean-Pierre Léaud, veteran actor Alain Cuny and Nathalie Baye, who by this point had established herself as one of France’s leading screen actors. Godard’s fascination with the expressive power of the human face finds a particularly compelling subject in Baye, whose magnetic screen presence further enhances the film while reflecting her growing stature within French cinema.
