Britain has had close to two decades of flat productivity, the widest regional disparities in Western Europe, and a housing and infrastructure stock it cannot seem to build its way out of. There is broad agreement that this has to change. There is much less agreement about what would actually change it. This event examines the case that the route to renewal runs through markets: limited but capable government, free enterprise, competition, cheaper energy, and a planning system that permits building. It asks what that agenda would mean in practice for the regions where growth has been weakest, and whether prosperity generated this way reaches them. That case has long been carried by the centre-right, a tradition now divided over whether it still holds. Our speakers are drawn from and around it, and the discussion will explore whether the market-liberal agenda has the ideas, and the political nerve, to deliver progress.
