Myth and legend abound in the opening concert of Bristol Concert Orchestra’s 2026/27 season! Conducted by Alex Mackinder with trumpet soloist Joshua Cusworth Programme Pépin La Source d’Yggdrasil (UK Premiere) Copland Quiet City Arutiunian Trumpet Concerto Rimsky-Korsakov Scheherazade Fresh from his acclaimed first full season with the orchestra, Alex Mackinder conducts Rimsky-Korsakov’s ever popular Scheherazade , its dazzling orchestral colours retelling various episodes from the One Thousand and One Nights , a collection of Middle Eastern folk-tales. Arutiunian’s exuberantly spirited Trumpet Concerto is likewise inspired by folk-music from his homeland of Armenia. Tonight’s soloist Joshua Cusworth also joins the BCO in Aaron Copland’s exquisitely beautiful incidental music from Irwin Shaw’s 1939 play, Quiet City. Opening the concert is music by French composer Camille Pépin, one of the most exciting compositional voices in classical music today; her extraordinary La Source d’Yggdrasil (The Source of Yggdrasil) takes inspiration from the giant tree that binds together the Norse mythological realms of Asgard, Midgard and Hel, and tonight receives its UK Premiere.
