In 1949, Erika (a superb Sandra Hüller) is accompanying her father, Nobel laureate author Thomas Mann, on a literary tour through West and East Germany. As family tragedy strikes, it becomes apparent that the spiritual healing Mann deems essential for the divided country may be necessary for their own relationship. It's an impeccably shot and evocative drama that meditates on the healing process for a fractured national identity. In a masterclass of control and precision, Paweł Pawlikowski explores the fragmented soul of postwar Germany through a father-daughter road trip dominated by personal ghosts.
