About this event

Cahoots Theatre Company presents Barb Jungr in Soho Songs Barb Jungr performs a song cycle celebrating Soho by Barb Jungr and Mike Lindup Accompanied by Michael Roulston Directed by Denise Silvey Soho. A single word, a single square mile, that contained a world unto itself, sparkling and shady, glamorous and gritty, cultured and crude. Time and gentrification may have banished Soho’s more notorious denizens into history, but for those who remember or who care to listen, phantoms still call out from its darkened alleys and posh storefronts. Cabaret legend Barb Jungr and jazz great Mike Lindup of Level 42 heeded that call and crafted their dazzling new song cycle, Soho Song s , to give new life to those faded voices. “Barb Jungr and Mike Lindup, words and music, have created this poignant homage to the Soho that many of us remember from our youth in the 1970s and 80s. A Soho before Westminster Council embarked on a clean up campaign. Gone are the women working the streets discreetly from a doorway or a red light positioned high up in a window, with a discreet name on a bell push. Gone are porn cinemas. The newsagent with a discreet back room for the purchase of more exotic publications. When there was a single gay bar, discreetly situated down a flight of stairs, and a club or two with a pullback grill to be vetted before gaining entrance rather like a New York speakeasy from the 1930s.” ★ ★ ★ ★ Leon Ferguson, Musical Theatre Review
