America’s Undoing in the Middle East, with Kim Ghattas and Lyse Doucet Kim Ghattas and Lyse Doucet are two of the most respected journalists covering the Middle East today. Ghattas, author of the widely praised Black Wave , a book about the historic rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran, has spent years examining the forces that have shaped the region, while Doucet, the BBC’s Chief International Correspondent, has reported from the frontlines of many of its defining conflicts. On November 5 , they will come to the Intelligence Squared stage for a conversation about the future of Lebanon, America and the forces that have shaped the modern Middle East. Drawing on decades of reporting, Ghattas and Doucet will bring clarity to this complex history and explore how decisions made in Beirut and Washington continue to shape the region today. The evening will also draw on Ghattas’s new book, The Best Kind of American , a gripping investigation into the unsolved 1984 murder of Malcolm Kerr, president of the American University of Beirut. The book follows the Kerr family’s search for answers while uncovering the wider forces behind Lebanon’s conflict and America’s involvement in the region.
