About this event

We are thrilled, as always, to welcome the inimitable Alexander McCall Smith back to Daunt Books to present his latest novels. Come and enjoy a wonderful evening with one of our most prolific and beloved authors. We will be hearing about three new titles. Firstly, The Isle of Good Karma , his brilliant new stand-alone novel set in Kathmandu. In this novel we meet Mary; a logical soul; a much-loved teacher and crofter whose busy Hebridean life leaves little room for flights of fancy. But when a windfall comes her way, Miss Macdonald decides it’s time to sample some clear mountain air – on the other side of the world. We will also re-renter the world of 44 Scotland Street with The Prime of Bertie Pollock where our beloved characters individually grapple with their separate identity crises. Lastly, we are back with our beloved Mma Ramotswe in Botswana. The Big Cats Dance Party is certainly full of events, even if it starts with a leisurely trip to buy a pair of shoes as a birthday present for Mr J.L.B. Matekoni. As often happens in Mma Ramotswe’s world, one thing leads to another, and we are soon caught up in an ill-thought-out plan hatched by Charlie, junior mechanic and enthusiastic trainee detective. Alexander McCall Smith is the author of many brilliant books, most famously the author of the No.1 Ladies Detective Agency , which made him a household name. His various series of books have been translated into forty-six languages and become bestsellers throughout the world. Alexander has received numerous awards for his writing and holds twelve honorary doctorates from universities in Europe and North America. In 2007 he received a CBE for services to literature and in 2011 was honoured by the President of Botswana for services through literature to the country. In 2024, he was honoured as Knight Bachelor by His Majesty King Charles III for services to literature, academia and charity. Ticket price includes a glass of wine or soft drink.
