The experimental fringe — emerging artists, non-institutional venues, work in progress.
Before a venue becomes canonical, there's a period when it's just a room that someone decided to use. London's experimental, artist-run venues are in that period now — project spaces in industrial units, one-night events in borrowed rooms, works-in-progress shown before they're finished. The programming is provisional, the audiences are small, and the work tends to be more formally adventurous than anything you'd find in a building with a marketing department.

Meet the Living Newspaper Unit and gain an insight into research undertaken by artist and creative fellow Hilary Powell in our Newsroom, exploring histories of power and energy through the microfilm newspaper collection. This performative event marks the culmination of Hilary's creative fellowship at the Library. During her fellowship Powell has delved into the history of the 1930s Federal Theatre Project, an initiative established by the United States government to support the employment of theatre workers in the wake of the Great Depression. Powell focused particularly on the Living Newspaper Unit within the project, a radical practice where current events were developed into productions bringing urgent social issues of the day to a popular audience, though many were censored and never performed publicly.Drawing on this methodology, Powell has set up her own Living Newspaper Unit, with members recruited from the British Library's Youth Collective and readers in the Newsroom. In her performance Powell invites us to consider, what might a Living Newspaper look like in our time and place? How can its making be performed? And what power does the archive hold to illuminate the present and to shape contemporary debate and action?

Marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, The Eccles Institute for the Americas presents a conversation between Tom Holland, co-host of Podcast of the year 2025, The Rest is History, and American historian, Sarah Pearsall Professor of History at Johns Hopkins University.Sarah Pearsall ground-breaking new book, Freedom Round the Globe: How the World Made the American Revolution boldly reframes this pivotal period in history, going beyond how the Revolution transformed the wider world, to examine how global events and individuals shaped the Revolution itself. From Kolkata in India, to Anomabu in Ghana and Bkejwanong in Canada, her research uncovers surprising figures – leaders, diplomats, traders, mothers, and communities – whose actions influenced the course of events in North America.Together, Tom and Sarah delve into these global stories, the research behind them, and how they reshape our understanding of a world in motion at the birth of a new nation. The event will be recorded for The Rest is History Club members.

Since October 2023, Gaza has been sealed from the world-except for one group, international doctors. While global media are barred from reporting and governments look away, doctors breach the blockade and what they find is not just a humanitarian crisis, but a calculated dismantling of life itself.

Join us for two lunchtime talks.Forefathers: Four Jamaican Fathers, Four Countries, One DaughterThrough four Jamaican father figures in her family, whose ancestry extends across Scotland, China and India, Jacqueline Crooks explores a personal story of how fatherhood was shaped by colonial power. Blending literary practice with archival investigation, she examines fathers made – and constrained – by history, and the emotional costs that echo across generations. In so doing, she shows how literature offers a way to read what the archive cannot hold.Chinese Labour Recruitment for the British CaribbeanFrom 1852 to 1874, over 13,000 Chinese migrated to the British Caribbean, mostly as indentured labourers. They came through a global labour network that emerged in response to crippling post-emancipation labour problems in the British Caribbean. In contrast to the recruitment of Chinese labour for Cuba, indentured Chinese migration to the British Caribbean operated as a system of both voluntary migration and unfree labour. Samuel Niu explores the challenges posed by this unusual combination, the implications this held for the labour regime, and why Chinese migrants voluntarily entered a system of unfree labour.
