The National, on The Mound between Edinburgh's Old and New Towns, holds Scotland's foremost collection of historic Scottish and European fine art, from Raeburn and Ramsay to Titian, Rembrandt and Gauguin, alongside a programme of loan exhibitions. It is one of four National Galleries of Scotland sites — the one to visit for historical depth rather than contemporary programming, which lives across town at Modern One and Two — and it particularly suits visitors happy to look slowly rather than move quickly through a checklist.
