His music is a blend of his Caribbean roots with the harmonic and improvisational complexities of jazz, creating a lively and eclectic meld all his own. Born in Trinidad, Leon Foster Thomas has proven through his albums and performances that the steel pan has the musical sophistication to be taken as seriously in the jazz universe as the more well-known vibraphone. Winner of the World Steelband Music Festival Soloist and Duet competition of 2002 and 2004, critics laud him as “…masterful with impeccable musicianship” (When Steel Talks); “a benevolent wizard” (Venice Magazine). Leon has collaborated with legendary artists in the jazz scene and beyond including Hugh Masekela, Randy Brecker, Sammy Figueroa, Vince Mendoza, Dolly Parton, John Beasley, Mino Cinelu, Orphy Robinson, Cyril Neville, Ky-Mani Marley and many more. He has performed at internationally renowned venues such as New York’s Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Adrienne Arsht Center of the Performing Arts in Miami, and Moscow’s International House of Music. He also played a significant part in Her Late Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022. Inspired as much by the melodic poetry of the great Keith Jarrett’s piano sound as Trinidad’s celebrated steel pan heritage, Leon has taken the instrument to new heights, giving it a seriously fresh makeover in how it is now viewed across the music world. More than just a Carnival instrument, the chromatically-scaled steel pan has seen, in Leon’s hands, a significant step forward in its perception as an instrument of improvisational artistry and expression.

You can expect to hear arrangements and transcriptions of compositions by Joe Henderson, Art Farmer, Thelonious Monk, Wynton Marsalis, and many more, with these incredible musicians putting their own stamp on the music, drawing from influences far and wide. Sam Glaser, James Copus, Tom Barford and Olli Martin have known each other as friends and musical colleagues for over 15 years. Having studied together at the Royal Academy of Music, and having been house-mates for several years, this collaboration is long overdue. Each have pursued their own path musically and received recognition for their playing, and with the four of them at the front of this septet, you can expect a high-octane performance. They are joined by a tour-de-force rhythm section, comprising Will Barry, Will Sach, and Will Cleasby. These musicians, each renowned individually for virtuosic playing and limitless creativity, often come together to form one of the notorious rhythm sections in the UK. Between them, they have toured internationally with the likes of Wynton Marsalis, Jerry Bergonzi, Joe Farnsworth, Eddie Henderson, and Kurt Elling.

AGMP Concert Presents: JOHN SCOFIELD’S LONG DAYS QUARTET feat. John Medeski, Ted Poor & Vicente Archer After post pandemic touring of Trios, Duos and Solo, John Scofield has configured a new group for the Summer of 2025. Calling it the Long Days Quartet in honour of the lengthy daylight hours of July, this group is freshly forming to debut Scofield’s recent groove compositions and revisit some classic Scofield material with modern perspectives. 26 years after their initial association (John Scofield’s A GoGo album) keyboardist John Medeski and John Scofield continue their imaginative collaboration together. Over the decades they've followed with three more albums and much touring with Medeski Scofield Martin and Wood, Duo work and together in the cooperative project Hudson. Summer 2025 will unite them with the brilliant and versatile bassist Vicente Archer and a new team member, Seattle based Ted Poor on drums. John played with Ted in the Scary Goldings group and loved it. Make your dinner reservation to eat at our Margins Cafe before the show!
