Polanski, who worked on the adaptation with Kenneth Tynan, treats the Macbeths as a young, sexy, power-hungry couple and creates up to the very final shot a chilling sense of foreboding. What is startling is how often, since the beginnings of cinema, his plays have been adapted for the screen. Following a highly successful season devoted to the work of Harold Pinter, Chiswick Cinema now focuses on the infinite variety of filmed Shakespeare and will accompany four major screenings with talks, supplementary showings and celebrity interviews.
