The BFI have released this restoration of this well-loved film from 1978. Set in rural Sri Lanka, it tells of schoolgirl Kusum, who cleans the house of a wealthy family, including their son Nimal. He volunteers to tutor her through her exams, and although she knows it will be frowned upon, she forms a romantic attachment to him. Meanwhile, her younger sister Soma, enters beauty pageants and dreams of becoming a movie star and escaping her lowly existence. Both Vasanthi Chathurani, who plays Kusum, and director Sumitra Peries went on to have distinguished careers in Sri Lankan cinema. Sinhala with English subtitles.
