In the week before COP31, the annual platform for negotiating and advancing global action on climate change, this event will reflect on the state of national transition planning in 2026. Meeting national climate targets increasingly depends on mobilising private capital and translating these ambitions into commitments and policies that the private sector, including investors, can act on. Building on their economy-wide targets and climate laws, many countries have initiated sectoral transition planning to guide corporate decarbonisation and attract transition finance. This is a key finding of the TPI Centre’s State of the Sovereign Transition 2026 report. In this event, the TPI Centre will highlight common gaps and emerging best practices in climate policymaking by drawing on the latest data from the ASCOR (Assessing Sovereign Climate-related Opportunities and Risks) tool. Panellists representing investor and government perspectives will share insights on transition planning at the sectoral level and discuss the novel financial instruments that sovereigns are leveraging to raise transition finance.
